You can use an old car genorator and voltage regulator, battary and inverter. Then all you have to do is decide how you are going to power it. Water power , or wind. then make a windmill or water mill to turn the genorator. you can also use a car alternater with a built in regulator. hope this helps you out.

The first answer is good and basic for startes on the cheap
Good Idea to look at charts like I source to see if wind power in your area will give you what your expecting

It would be a lot of trouble, and you can buy a small wind turbine with the fixtures that adapt it to provide electricity directly into your AC system, a 1kw system would cost about 2500 US$ and you could build a tower for the turbine and install the whole system yourself, or with the help of a local electrician.
you could save about 12kWh per day, and can do a return of investment based on that assumption at the marginal cost of 1kWh you pay.

What I would do is to find a car that has 110v plugs in it, such as the Pontiac Vibe - and get the voltage controller that ups the 12V from the battery.
Once this is achieved, get a bank of 12V batteries, and set up a few turbines with car alternators. The turbines would be hooked up to the batteries, and the batteries would output to the hardware found from the voltage control unit from the vehicle. I’ve seen this setup at a small hunting lodge, and it worked great for basic usage, however shrewd.

The otherpower web site would be a good start.
Though I’d try to find out first where the power from the grid comes from (just to make sure it isn’t already non polluting although it’ll probably turn out to be mostly coal).
For your grid connection make sure that you have it completely cut out during a black out so that none of the power you generate gets fed into the grid, you do not want to accidentally kill a maintenance worker. You might need to call in a professional for help.
As for not having a grid connection, your wind power system probably won’t work all the time so unless you only want power a quarter (or more likely even less) of the time…
Also make sure that you’ve got enough room to actually put a windmill up, if you’re not on a big property then you probably shouldn’t be playing with wind power.

Of course your local utility is of no help - you are trying to get them OUT of their business!
